DEAR GOD: This Offering Is For YOUR Eyes Only!~

Matthew 6:4 That your alms may be in secret: and your Father which sees ...

“But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth.”Matthew 6:3 (KJV)

In this concise verse, Jesus encourages secrecy in our acts of charity. The phrase “let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth” is a vivid expression emphasizing utmost discretion at all times. It suggests that our giving should be so private that even our own left hand (representing our self-awareness) remains unaware of our actions. While this may seem hyperbolic, it underscores the sincerity and purity of our motives. We are not to do things to say, “look at me, aren’t I generous, or I’m so good and kind.”  No! – Instead, we are to do things on a sincerity meter of consciousness, meaning – with all of our heart, coupled by a generosity that goes to the recipient.

The LORD knows our heart. He knows our mind. He knows our soul – He created it after all!  We cannot fool the LORD – nor should we want to!  Giving, responding to others, and being generous in private will be seen by the One that matters most, our LORD!  Nothing else matters, except that we are compassionate in our actions, while representing Christ, His commandments, His doctrine, His Gospel, and His Word!  Period! Let’s take a deeper look at the concept of this prolific verse. Let’s see how we can incorporate this verse into our lives today, and what it may mean overall.

Symbolic Application

The “right hand” symbolizes our higher spiritual nature, leading us to genuine acts of charity. The “left hand” represents our baser, self-seeking tendencies. We should create a barrier between these two, avoiding mixed motives that taint our generosity.

Ethics and Morals

Authenticity Over Showmanship- Jesus contrasts the Pharisees’ public displays with true Christian behavior. Our giving should glorify God, regardless of human opinion. Authenticity matters so much more than pomp and circumstance!

God as the Sole Witness- We should seek God’s approval, not human applause. Acts done in secret are pleasing to Him. Our reward may come in this life or the next.

Takeaway Thought –Our charity should flow from a heart genuinely devoted to God. When we give selflessly, we honor Him, regardless of recognition. We are doing all according to His Will and purpose for our lives. We are truly being a representative for Christ and honoring Him by being a vessel for His Word towards others.

Reflective Questions

  1. How can we cultivate a heart that seeks God’s approval above all else?
  2. Are there areas where our giving lacks sincerity or is tainted by vanity?

Meditative Thoughts

  1. Reflect on a recent act of charity you performed.
  2. Imagine doing it in complete secrecy, with only God as your witness.
  3. Feel the purity of intention and the absence of external validation.
  4. Thank God for His grace and the privilege of serving others.

Powerful Unity Prayer:

“Dear LORD, may our acts of charity be rooted in love for You. Help us give without seeking human praise, knowing that You see every secret deed. May our hearts align with Your will, and may our generosity bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
