Commentary on John 10:7-9 (KJV)

Introduction: In John 10:7-9, Jesus presents Himself as “the door of the sheep,” a powerful metaphor that speaks volumes about His role as the protector and savior of His followers. These verses emphasize the exclusivity of Jesus as the means of salvation and the abundant life He offers. Let’s delve into these profound words, exploring their historical context, theological significance, and their enduring relevance in today’s world.

Historical Overview: In ancient times, shepherds played a crucial role in agrarian societies. They were responsible for the safety and well-being of their flocks. At night, sheep were often kept in a pen or a fold, with a single entrance. The shepherd would lie across the entrance, literally becoming the door, to protect the sheep from predators and thieves. This imagery would have been immediately understood by Jesus’ audience, who were familiar with the pastoral life.

Verse 7: “Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.” Jesus declares Himself as the door, using the metaphor of a shepherd’s role as the gatekeeper of the sheepfold. By repeating “Verily, verily,” He emphasizes the importance and truth of His statement. This verse highlights the exclusivity of Jesus as the only way to enter the fold of God’s kingdom. Just as the sheep rely on the shepherd for protection and guidance, we rely on Jesus for spiritual security and direction.

Verse 8: “All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.” In this verse, Jesus contrasts Himself with false prophets and leaders who sought to lead God’s people astray. These “thieves and robbers” represent those who claimed to provide salvation but ultimately led to spiritual ruin. The true sheep, those who genuinely seek God, do not follow such deceitful voices. Reflective questions to ponder:

  • How can we discern the true voice of Jesus amidst the many voices in today’s world?
  • In what ways have false teachings impacted the faith community historically and in modern times?

Verse 9: “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” Jesus reiterates His role as the door and expands on the promise of salvation. Those who enter through Him will be saved, finding both security and sustenance. The image of going in and out and finding pasture speaks of the freedom, safety, and provision that come from being under Jesus’ care. This verse is a beautiful assurance of the abundant life Jesus offers to His followers.

Reflective Questions:

  • How can we live our lives in a way that reflects our trust in Jesus as the door to our salvation?
  • What steps can we take to ensure we are following the true voice of our Shepherd in today’s complex world?

Biblical References:

  • Psalm 23:1-3: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
  • John 14:6: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
  • Hebrews 13:20-21: “Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus, who is the door to our salvation. Help us to recognize and follow His voice amidst the distractions of this world. Grant us the wisdom to discern truth from falsehood and the courage to remain steadfast in our faith. May we always find our rest and provision in You, trusting in Your unfailing love and guidance. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings for the Reader: May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you always. May His voice guide you, His love envelop you, and His peace fill your heart. As you journey through life, may you continually find refuge and sustenance in Him. Blessings to you, now and forevermore. Amen.

Commentary on Habakkuk 2:3

Opening Reflection

There is immense joy in knowing that as Christians, we hold onto a hope that is not just a wishful thought but a steadfast assurance. Habakkuk 2:3 reminds us: “For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” This verse beautifully encapsulates the essence of our faith—patiently waiting for the fulfillment of God’s promises, knowing with certainty that His timing is perfect.

Working and Waiting for the Lord

Living with the hope of God’s promises means actively engaging in His work while waiting for His timing. This involves loving and serving others, spreading the Gospel, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him through prayer and scripture. Waiting on the Lord is not a passive activity; it’s about preparing our hearts and minds, staying vigilant, and being steadfast in our faith. We can take comfort in knowing that our labor is not in vain and that God is always working behind the scenes.

Reflective Questions

It means standing firm in our faith amidst challenges and being a testament to God’s love and grace. By staying rooted in the Word, we can navigate the complexities of modern life with wisdom and compassion, always reflecting the character of Christ.

As we wait, guide us to serve others with love and kindness. Strengthen our faith, deepen our understanding of Your Word, and help us to be a light in this world. May our actions reflect Your love, and may our lives be a testament to Your grace and faithfulness. We pray for those who are in a season of waiting. DEAR GOD: I’m In Your Hands & You Are In Control~

LifeNotes Encouragement: It's in God's Hands

Experiencing God and His Awesome Power and Presence is overwhelming, and at times hard to put into words.

His Presence and providence is an existence that brings joy and rewards beyond comprehension. Living in confidence of His love and promises affords us the opportunity to exhibit behavior that reflects His light and love. And when we align with His Word and His commandments, we are capable and able to do all things through “Christ” as stated in Philippians 4:13.

When we humbly seek His face in all we do – He is there and guides us in all of our paths. I’ve witnessed countless people who are lost and miserable, and although they are of different backgrounds, races, or status – they all shared one thing – they didn’t have a relationship with Christ.  They didn’t know Him, His voice, His ways – His doctrine – His Word!  It rips my heart to shreds when I see this – and have many times over.  So, I can only imagine what it does to our LORD above!

I’ve also been witness to those who came to the LORD after being broken, lost – in a muddle of darkness – and desperate – and hopeless.  Yet, when they make the turn and come to the LORD in humility seeking His love – He is always there waiting. And the transformation in their lives becomes glaringly apparent as the LIGHT is turned on!

  • Are you in the dark?
  • Do you feel lost?
  • Are you looking for help and hope?

When you connect to the LORD and His Spirit it is an amazing feeling. It’s as if the suffocation of the world is finally released and you can breathe!

When you live for Him in all you do – things happen – and continue to happen in your life. For one thing you can handle adversity more readily – and able to sustain it with the LORD in your corner. He will hold you up with His right hand of righteousness.

Isaiah 41:10
He will guide all of your paths when you trust in Him exclusively and fully (Proverbs 3:5-8). He will bring health to your bones and joy to your spirit and life.
He cares for you – and cares about you. Always- no matter what.

I have witnessed so many miraculous recoveries with my patients in nursing homes.
And with friends and neighbors. Me -included!

Things that doctors couldn’t understand and had them scratching their heads staring with incredulous faces at the results of tests that proved them all wrong.

God is in control, and when others are ready to pull the covers over your head and give up on you – God says, “ NO WAY – My Beloved has more things to do.”  Science and diagnostic tests were pointing to a grim report – but then God’s hand of grace and mercy and love wiped it all away! Hello Life!

That is who God is!
Merciful, faithful, loving, compassionate and Omnipotent!
Strong – in control- and always wants what is best for us!

For those who want to know Him and experience the joy of being with Him in all your days on earth and beyond, when you are called “home” for eternity – it’s never too late.

He is waiting for you – always is – and always will be.

Once you accept Him and His Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you – life will NEVER be the same again. Never!

Don’t believe me – do it for yourself!
Then readily accept the single greatest gift that anyone can ever receive in this life and beyond!
Salvation and love of Christ!
He only wants your love in return – what a deal- what a gift- what an amazing King of kings and LORD of lords!

Isaiah 53:5ESVBut he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.

His book of Love the Bible- is waiting – may I suggest reading any of the Gospels to start if you haven’t read the Word. Gospel of John and Matthew are good places to begin.

Brothers and Sisters – start living the life God intended you to live – and open your heart and accept Him in – then begin to BREATHE in a way you never have before!

God Bless You All~

Here is a prayer you can pray to accept Him and follow Him.

“I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness.
I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believe that He died
for my sin and that you raised Him to life.
I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord,
from this day forward. Father, please guide my life
and help me to do your will.
I accept Jesus as my LORD and savior.
