Christianity Today: A Lens on Contemporary Faith

In our present age, Christianity faces diverse and exceedingly difficult and changing challenges, along with opportunities. It grapples with questions of ethics, mortality and faith in a rapidly deteriorating world that is seemingly crumbling in a constant state of iniquity and debauchery. Yes, there is light and goodness, and it will prevail. But the “darkness” and the chaos is what most people “thrive in” -that is to say, media, news, etc.  You see being faithful, living a clean and healthy life, representing the light of Christ, and reflecting His love is not of “popular opinion” or mind. But it is our inherent duty as Christians, to stand up and maintain that structure on the Rock, in all we say and do on a daily basis, irrespective of what “the media or news” circa wants to promote.  Keep promoting instead – the LORD Jesus Christ!

 Morality and Reflection

Morality—the prevailing standards of behavior— especially as individuals of deep faith -shapes our lives. The heavens’ declaration invites us to reflect on our actions, choices, and values. And to always consider and put Christ first in all we do. Contemplate, and prayer and coummune with the LORD on everything, and you will no doubt be able to navigate the toughest time with relative ease and peace when you do so!

  1. What moral principles guide my decisions?
  2. How do I align my life with God’s design?
  3. Am I pursuing righteousness in my daily interactions?

In the bustling city of Jerusalem, where life’s trials and temptations abound, Jeremiah’s words echo through time. He paints a vivid picture of a blessed man—one who trusts in the Lord and finds hope in His unwavering love. Let us explore and look beneath the layers of meaning within this verse.

The Blessed Man

Trusting in the Lord is the cornerstone of true blessing. Our dependence on God surpasses reliance on human strength or worldly solutions. Suffice it to say, we cannot accomplish things alone without His hand of guidance and His Presence in our lives. It is one thing to do things, but quite another to be successful and at ease in what we do. When we are at ease, it is usually a sign that is from above – from the LORD. When filled with vapid uneasiness or doubt, it can usually be a sign that it is not the will of God, and He wants to get your attention.

Because the roots are entrenched fully, completely in the LORD!  When we are securely rooted in Him – we will blossom and create fruits of the Spirit which will take us through life in a way God planned.

We, too, can be like this tree—rooted in God’s promises. Our spiritual nourishment comes from prayer, Scripture, and fellowship. And faith in the LORD in all things. Not relying on humans, because they will undoubtedly fail to meet our expectations. The blessed man remains green even in scorching heat. His trust shields him from anxiety during spiritual droughts. Trusting in the LORD is akin to having a “shield” around us at all times. It is our protection from all kinds of elements and destruction and evil things happening in the world. When we trust in Him, we are able to see in the “spiritual realm” seeking things from above at all times, and the Kingdom of God of which is what we are striving for.

In John 11:35, the shortest verse in the entire Bible -we encounter these two poignant words: “Jesus wept.” But why did He cry? Here are some significant aspects:

Compassion and Empathy:
Jesus wept because He understood the pain and suffering that death brings. Despite His power to overcome death, He felt the heaviness of sin and the human experience. His tears serve as a reminder of His deep love and empathy for humanity, even in the face of miraculous solutions.

Reflective Question:
How can we cultivate empathy and compassion for others, especially during times of grief and loss?

Shared Humanity:
The Lord Jesus, though Divine, lived a perfect life in human form. He experienced the same feelings as those around Him. His tears reveal His solidarity with our struggles, sorrows, and limitations. This was clearly a human characteristic that we “all share” – TEARS!

Knowing He is there for us through each emotion we express, and all of which we are going through. He is with us through it all! Holding us up with His strength, Spirit and guidance – and LOVE.

Comforting Others:
Just as Jesus comforted Lazarus’s sisters, we can be present for those who grieve. Our tears can be a source of comfort and healing for others. “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.” – (Matthew 6)

How can you offer comfort to someone who is hurting?

Modeling Compassion:

Our responsibility is to love sacrificially, reflecting God’s character in all practical matters in which we live. He is commanding us in John 13:24, He is not asking – He is saying “you are to love one another” no questions asked. Just do it and obey His Word.

 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10, ESV)

We’re called to serve others, meeting practical needs. We have an inherent responsibility as followers of Christ and His Gospel. Adhering to the Word should be an overall “map” in which we travel, while aligning with His Word in all of our action, speech and daily interactions with others. While staying true to ourselves in the spirit of Christ.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19, ESV)

Share the Gospel boldly. Be open with your love for the LORD. Express it without shame and without hesitation. Be open about your feelings for the God and He will be open with you in return.

Finding Refuge in God

 Psalm 4 is a heartfelt cry from King David, expressing both his distress and unwavering trust in God. In these verses, we witness David’s dialogue with both God and his adversaries. Let’s dive into the richness of this psalm, as we see the meaning and intent of this Psalm to us as children of Christ!

1. David Talks to God (Psalm 4:1)

“Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have relieved me in my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.”

  • Passionate Prayer: David’s plea isn’t mere words; it’s a passionate cry for God’s attention. He acknowledges that his righteousness comes from God alone.
  • Past Mercy as Ground for Future Help: David reminds God of His past deliverance, trusting that God won’t abandon him now. Our prayers gain power when we remember God’s faithfulness.

2. David Talks to Men (Psalm 4:2-3)

In Christ – Pt. 1 | More Than A Sunday Faith

“But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds, we are healed.” -Isaiah 53:5 (KJV)

 Isaiah 53 is a powerful chapter that prophetically describes the suffering and sacrificial death of the Messiah. It paints a vivid picture of Jesus as the suffering Servant who willingly bore our sins, bringing redemption and healing to humanity.

Redemption for Our Souls:

Jesus willingly took upon Himself the weight of our sins. His sacrifice on the cross provided redemption—a way for us to be reconciled with God. Through His blood, we find forgiveness and restoration. Our souls, once burdened by guilt, are set free.

Pierced for Our Transgressions:

Jesus was pierced—crucified—on the cross, not for His own sins (for He was sinless) but for ours. His wounds represent the depth of His love and the extent to which He was willing to go to save us.
